Subject

Francisco de Xeres writes about how the Spanish capture the Incan King.

Description

Fransisco de Xeres, secretary of Fransisco Pizarro, writes about how Pizarro and the Spanish military were able to capture Atahualpa, the king of the Incas. After being addressed by a Pizarro and a monk, Atahualpa was taken into custody. This led to a fire fight, with many Incas being killed. Fearing the Spanish would kill him, Atahualpa paid Pizarro 60,000 pesos worth of gold and silver. Pizarro would take the payment, but would charge Atahualpa with conspiring against him. Atahualpa was sentenced to death by burning unless he became a Christian. Atahualpa agreed and was baptized. This did not matter, as Pizarro had Atahualpa strangled to death. This source is significant because it shows the cruelty carried about by the Spanish military leaders and the greed that came with it.
