Title

Spanish Colonial Administration

Subject

How the Spanish were able to govern their new colonies in the Americas.

Description

This resource provides images and maps of how the Spanish structured the colonial administration, as well as what areas the administration governed. While the leaders of the administration were typically in Spain, viceroyalties were in charge of the colonies. Church leaders were in charge of the treasury, while viceroyalties had power in executive, judicial, and legislative decisions. This source shows how the power was divided in New Spain and how Spain was able to grab control of the Americas outside of military control.
