Title

Horseback Riding

Subject

Spanish conquistador on horseback

Description

A 1561 engraving of a Spanish conquistador on horseback. Horses were one of the animals brought to the new world by the Spanish, and their use was crucial in colonizing the Americas. The native populations had never seen horses before and Europeans on horseback were able to use this as an advantage in the early colonial period. Horses proliferated across the Americas in wild populations that escaped European control, and native populations learned to adopt horseback riding.
